Ode to the Horizon (2017)

Homemade phonograph, glass, book, pen on paper

Pages from the book Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, which contained the word “Horizon” were used, in lieu of the glassblower’s wet newspaper paper, to form a 12-inch cylinder from molten glass that would be the recording surface for the phonograph. The word “Horizon” is found 18 times in the book. Over the span of 12 inches, the earth curves .00000024 inches, or virtually not at all. The homemade phonograph recorded my voice yelling the word “Horizon” in the form of an ink-line on paper.
